Class dismissed! 🎉 As of Sept 30, Tucson has a new group of Master Recyclers! 🎓♻️
Tucson is home to more than 548,000 people, and in 2025, nearly 687,000 tons of waste made its way to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus, that’s roughly 1,881 tons every day.
Managing waste for a growing community is no small task. It’s constantly evolving and takes all of us learning better ways to reduce, reuse, compost, recycle and responsibly dispose of what we no longer need.
That’s why Master Recyclers matter! 🌱♻️
These graduates have taken the time to learn Tucson’s waste system and the many resources available to our community. Now, they’re taking that knowledge back to their families, workplaces, neighborhoods and communities, helping answer questions and make sustainable choices a little easier.
From the evolution of the Los Reales Landfill into the Los Reales Sustainability Campus to programs supporting composting, hazardous waste collection, zero-waste efforts and recycling, Tucson’s approach to waste continues to grow and evolve.
🎉 Congratulations to our newest Master Recyclers! Thank you for learning, sharing and helping Tucson move toward a more sustainable future.
The more we know, the more we can share. And the more we share, the stronger our community becomes! 💚

What happens after we throw something “away”? 🚮🤔 The Master Recycler participants recently got a behind-the-scenes look at the answer during a field trip to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus. And seeing it firsthand gives a whole new perspective on our community’s waste. 🏜️♻️
Los Reales has been accepting waste since 1967, and today approximately 2,300 tons of solid waste arrive every day, from commercial haulers, landscapers, small haulers, and residents bringing in their own loads.
And there’s more to the campus than one big landfill. Different materials have different destinations, including yard and green waste, construction and demolition materials, scrap metal, household hazardous waste, and other items that may be diverted from landfill disposal. 🌿🔨♻️
We also got a look at a newer area of the landfill that is already filling with the waste our community generates. Standing there makes one thing pretty clear, There really is no “away.” 🚮
That doesn’t mean we have to feel super duper guilty about everything we throw out. This is an invitation to get curious! 💚
What can we reuse?
What can we recycle?
What can we compost?
What has a special drop-off location?
And what really needs to go to the landfill?
Sometimes it takes a little research to get the answer right, and that’s okay. Learning is part of the process. That’s what our Master Recyclers are doing! They are learning more about our local waste system so they can share that knowledge with their families, workplaces, and communities.
♻️ Want to learn more? Do some digging! 😉

This past Friday, our Master Recycler Program participants stepped inside a recycling facility to see firsthand what happens to our recyclables after they leave the curbside bin ♻️🚐🚮
At the Republic Services recycling center, they saw how plastic bottles, jugs and containers, aluminum, paper and cardboard are sorted, prepared and packaged for reuse. They also got an inside look at the incredible work of the team members who carefully sort through our recycling every day, removing materials that cannot be recycled and preparing recyclable materials for their next use.
This hands on experience brought their classroom learning to life and gave our Master Recyclers a greater understanding of why recycling correctly matters. Most importantly, they can now take what they learned back to their families, friends, neighbors and communities! 🌎♻️
Take a look inside the recycling center and stay tuned for Part 2 of our Master Recycler field trip as we make our way to the Los Reales Sustainability Campus!
