Ad costs climb in Q4 even if you sell nothing anyone would wrap and put under a tree.
You are not only bidding against other contractors. You are sharing an auction with every retailer running a holiday budget, and they treat October through December as the whole year. Same auction, more money in it.
Three things worth doing this week.
• Pull your impression share and find out whether you are losing it to budget or to rank. Those are two different problems. Lost to budget means you are getting outspent. Lost to rank means the ad or the landing page is the weak part, and more money will not fix it.
• Decide which service lines you are willing to pay more for. Not all of them. Pick the two with the best margin and let the rest run lean through the quarter.
• Check your budget caps now rather than in December. A cap set in July will quietly throttle you in November, and the report will just look like a slow month.
None of this makes the auction cheaper. It makes sure the money you do spend lands on the work you actually want.

End of the month. Pull out your phone and spend five minutes on your own website.
Load the homepage on cellular data instead of office wifi, so you see what a customer standing in a driveway sees. Tap the phone number and confirm it dials. Scroll the whole homepage and watch for text running off the edge, buttons stacked on top of each other, or a popup you cannot close with a thumb.
Then do the same on your busiest service page.
Most sites get checked on a desktop monitor by the person who built them. Most visitors show up on a phone with two bars. Those are not the same website.

Your service page should answer the questions you already answer on the phone.
Write down the five questions your team gets asked most.
Do you charge for estimates.
How soon can someone come out.
Do you work weekends.
Do you handle the permit.
What happens if you find something worse once you open the wall.
Now check whether any of those are answered anywhere on your website.
Usually they are not, because they feel too basic to publish. But those are the exact questions standing between a visitor and a phone call, and answering them on the page does two things at once. It removes the reason to keep shopping, and it gives your team back the ten minutes per call they spend covering the same ground.

A question we get a lot right now: what do we need to change so AI tools recommend us?
Mostly, the same things that have always made a page worth citing.
AI answer tools pull from pages that state facts plainly and can be verified. That means clear service descriptions instead of vague positioning language. Real service areas written out. Hours, pricing structure, and licensing where you can share them. Answers to actual customer questions written as answers, not as lead-ins to a sales pitch. Consistent business information across your site and your listings, so there is one version of the truth to pull from.
None of that is new. It is the same clarity work that helps a customer decide, helps a search engine understand the page, and now helps an answer engine quote you accurately.
If your pages are already specific and factual, you are in better shape than you think. If they read like a brochure, that is the work.

Search your own business name. Not a service, not a keyword. Your actual name, the way a customer would type it.
Do it in a private window so your own history does not clean up the results.
Look at what fills the first screen. Is your website first? Is your Google Business Profile panel on the right, and is the information in it correct? What sits below you? Directory pages, a competitor bidding on your name, an old Yelp listing from a previous address, a page nobody has touched in four years?
Branded search is the highest-intent search you get. Somebody heard about you and went looking. Whatever they find on that screen is your first impression, and a lot of it is not on your website.
Fix the parts you control. Claim or update the directory listings, delete or redirect the dead profiles, and make sure the phone number is the same everywhere.

A perspective is not your story or your team photos. Everyone has those, and they blur together.
A perspective is an opinion about the work that some of your competitors would disagree with.
"We won't quote that over the phone, and here's why."
"That repair isn't worth doing on a unit this old."
"Most people are buying more capacity than they need."
That's the thing nobody can lift off your site, because taking it would mean committing to it.
What’s one thing you believe about your trade that you've argued about for years?
If nobody could disagree with what you wrote, it isn't a perspective yet. It's just a description.

Worth a Look: Google's Rich Results Test.
Paste in any page URL and it tells you which structured data Google can actually read on that page, and whether it is eligible for enhanced listings like review stars, FAQ dropdowns, or business info.
It is free, it takes about ten seconds, and it is the same tool Google uses to validate the markup. If your developer told you schema was added last year, this is how you confirm it is still there and still valid after a year of theme and plugin updates.
Two things to know. Eligible does not mean guaranteed, since Google decides what to show. And the test only reads the page you give it, so check your homepage, a service page, and a location page separately.

The promise isn't made by your website. It's made by whatever they clicked.
It could come from ad headlines, search result titles, a map listing, or a post. That specific line is what got them to move. Then they land on a homepage built to say everything to everyone, and not one of the words they just read is on it.
If someone clicks "emergency water heater repair" and lands on a page that opens with when your company was founded, they have to do the translating. Most won't. They go back and click the next result.
You usually don't need a new page. You need the page to finish the sentence the click started.

We are closed today for Labor Day.
The holiday exists because people organized for the workweek most of us now take for granted. Worth remembering that it was won, not given.
We also know a lot of the businesses we work with do not get the day off. Somebody's water heater still goes out on a Monday, and somebody is still driving out to fix it. If that is you, thank you.
We will be back Tuesday morning.

Quick one before the long weekend.
Go look at the first three photos on your Google Business Profile.
Those are the ones most people actually see, and for a lot of businesses they are whatever got uploaded in 2019, plus whatever a customer posted from a parking lot.
Swap in three current ones. A clean exterior shot so people recognize the place when they pull up, your team or a truck, and one shot of finished work. Take them on a phone in daylight and they will be fine.
It is the closest thing you have to a storefront window, and it is free to update.
