♻️Upcoming Saturday Dates for the Recycling Drop-off Center

The Drop-off Recycling Center is open two Saturdays each month by appointment only. Appointments become available to reserve two weeks before each drop-off date.
- The September 26 date is open now,
- the October 10 date will open for reservations this Saturday, on September 26, and
- the October 24 date will open for reservations on October 10.

Today is the first day of Pollution Prevention Week, and this year's theme is 'A Better Tomorrow Starts with Pollution Prevention Today.”

Pollution prevention, or P2, means stopping pollution at its source before it is created. Residents can help by reducing vehicle idling and unnecessary trips, using manual or electric lawn equipment, choosing low-VOC paints, and using alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

These choices help prevent harmful emissions and pollutants from entering our air, water, and soil in the first place.

To bag or not to bag?

You should always BAG YOUR TRASH. Bagging refuse helps keep pests away and keeps our neighborhoods clean. It prevents trash from being blown away while being dumped or transported, and keeps our employees safe when handling waste.

Recyclables, on the other hand, should remain LOOSE IN THE RECYCLING BIN—no plastic bags, please. Plastic bags hinder proper sorting as recyclables cannot go through the recycling machinery and they often cause jams in the machines.

Reminder that Styrofoam cannot be recycled curbside. Here’s what to do instead:

♻️ Recycling Drop-Off Center (by appointment only):
Acceptable Styrofoam includes: foam cups and to-go containers, egg cartons, ice chests, rinsed meat trays, protective packaging foam (electronics, shipping), Any foam marked with #6 inside the chasing arrows triangle. Not accepted includes foam packaging peanuts.

🏬 Goodwill option:
Residents can also bring Styrofoam to designated receptacles at participating Goodwill stores and donation centers. Find locations here: www.goodwilldetroit.org/stores

🗑️ Otherwise, place Styrofoam in your trash.
