Detroit’s riverfront skyline is about to look a whole lot different.

The JW Marriott Detroit Water Square is getting ready to welcome its first guests in February 2027, and the team behind the new hotel is now taking shape.

But one of the biggest draws may be its connection to Huntington Place.
The hotel will be linked to the convention center by a skybridge, giving convention guests direct access to downtown accommodations while bringing more activity to Detroit’s riverfront. Marriott

For Detroit, this is bigger than another hotel opening. It adds another major piece to the city's evolving hospitality, convention, entertainment, and riverfront ecosystem.

A portion of Brush Street reopened last week as the neighborhood’s $20 million streetscape project nears completion.

The redesign brings wider sidewalks, curbless streets, new patios and improved pedestrian space, giving restaurants and businesses more room to welcome people back. Several businesses say the construction period was difficult, with some reporting major drops in traffic while the work was underway.
Now, the focus is shifting from construction to recovery.

And with Detroit’s sports season underway, Greektown businesses are hoping the redesigned streets bring back the foot traffic they’ve been waiting for.

The project is expected to be fully completed by the end of fall, although additional work around Monroe and St. Antoine is still scheduled.

Spirit Halloween has returned to Metro Detroit, taking over more than a dozen vacant retail spaces for its seasonal pop-up stores.
The retailer is using former CVS, Walgreens, Joann Fabrics, furniture stores and other vacant big-box locations as temporary Halloween destinations. Across North America, Spirit Halloween says it has more than 1,550 seasonal locations this year.

It’s a familiar fall tradition, but there’s an interesting real-estate story underneath it: vacant retail space doesn't always stay vacant.
Seasonal businesses like this can bring activity back to properties that might otherwise sit empty while landlords look for longer-term tenants.
And honestly… there’s something very Detroit about knowing a storefront as “the old ___” and then seeing Spirit Halloween take it over every October.
