This we explore Camp Concordia in Cloud County. The camp was one of the largest Prisoner of War (POW) camps in the state, housing mostly German prisoners. From July 1943 to November 1945, it housed thousands of people, including 4,000 prisoners at its height. Over 800 American guards and nearly 200 civilians also resided on the grounds in over 300 buildings, of which 5 of these original buildings still stand today.

Although resources were limited due to the war, prisoners had some privileges; they had their own band and newspaper. German medics and surgeons were able to assist in the hospital. American and German surgeons performed surgeries together. One American surgeon recalled he had two German surgeons assigned to assist him and that, while they didn’t understand each other’s language, they made a good team. Within two years of working together they learned to communicate with one another.

The site is now the home of the POW Camp Concordia Museum, which is open by appointment only. However, the stone guard tower can be viewed at any time from the road. It’s a great attraction for those planning to join the Kansas Sampler Foundation at the Big Kansas Road Trip in Concordia this Saturday!
