Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds 🛏️, couches 🛋️, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery🔋 to overheat. 🔥

🔥🚒 Learning Fire Safety During National Fire Prevention Week! 🚒🔥

The Topeka Fire Department is helping young students learn important lessons that can help keep them safe! ❤️

This week, TFD’s Ryan Neill visited Whitson Elementary School, where he taught preschool and third-grade students about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.

Students learned several important safety lessons, including:

🔥 Stay away from hot things
☎️ Report an emergency
🚪 Know two ways out
📍 Have an outside meeting place
🔋 Charge into Fire Safety — learning how to safely use and charge devices powered by lithium-ion batteries

These are important lessons for children to learn at an early age and practice with their families at home.

A big thank you to Whitson Elementary for welcoming TFD and helping us spread the fire safety message during National Fire Prevention Week, October 4–10, 2026! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

Use the cord 🔌and charger that came with your device or ones approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery 🔋 and increase the risk of fire. 🔥

🐾 🔥 TFD K-9 Skye in the Spotlight! 🔥 🐾

Thank you to KSNT reporter Isabella Cahill for featuring Topeka Fire Department K-9 Skye and his colleague, Fire Inspector Brad Hanika, in recognition of National Fire Pup Day! 🐕‍🦺 🚒

K-9 Skye plays an important role on the TFD Investigative Team, using his specially trained nose to detect accelerants and assist fire investigators as they work to determine the cause of fires in our community. 🔍 🔥

K-9 Skye is one paw-tastic, lovable and hardworking guy who brings some serious skills—and plenty of personality—to the job! He is a valued member of our investigative team and an important part of the TFD family! 🐾 ❤️

Thank you, KSNT, for helping our community learn more about Skye and the important work he does!

🐾🐶 Celebrating K-9 Skye on National Fire Pup Day! 🚒🐾

This October 1, the Topeka Fire Department is proud to recognize our very own K-9 Skye in honor of National Fire Pup Day!

Skye is more than a four-legged member of the TFD family. Through his loyalty, dedication and service, he proudly represents the special bond between working K-9s and the firefighters they serve alongside.

Today, we give Skye an extra round of ap-paws 🐾👏 and thank him for being such a valued member of the Topeka Fire Department family!

Help us show TFD K-9 Skye some love in the comments! ❤️🐶

🌧️⚠️ FLOOD WATCH ISSUED FOR TOPEKA & SHAWNEE COUNTY ⚠️🌧️

The U.S. National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Topeka and Shawnee County through tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, October 1.

⛈️ Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall capable of causing flooding are possible. A slow moving, moisture laden system is expected to bring widespread rainfall of two to four inches, with locally higher amounts of around six inches.

If you encounter flooded roadways 🚗:
❌ Never drive through standing or moving water.
❌ Never drive around barricades or road closure signs.
✅ Turn around and find a safer alternate route.
🌊 Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown® 🌊

As little as 12 inches of moving water can carry away a vehicle, and flooded roads are often deeper and more dangerous than they appear.

📱 Stay weather-aware, monitor trusted forecasts, and be prepared to adjust your travel plans if conditions deteriorate.

❤️🧥 Spread Kindness. Share Warmth. Help a Neighbor. ❤️🧥

The Topeka Fire Department is proud to join KTWU and community partners for the 2026 Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive, happening October 1–31!

Community members are invited to honor the legacy of Fred Rogers by donating new or gently used, clean winter clothing to help keep local children and families warm this season. Items being collected include kids’ sweaters, hoodies, coats, scarves, gloves and blankets, as well as women’s coats.

🧤 There is a special need this year for kids’ sizes 3–7 clothing, hats, gloves and socks, along with kids’ blankets or throws.

🚒 All 12 Topeka Fire Department stations will serve as outdoor collection locations throughout October! Simply stop by your neighborhood fire station and place your donation in the designated collection bin.

Every donation is an opportunity to share a little kindness with a neighbor in need. Thank you, Topeka, for helping us carry on Mister Rogers’ legacy of caring for one another! ❤️
