Librarians Discuss the Challenges and Triumphs of Running a Library Today (Gift Article) We asked dozens of them about America’s libraries — what they provide, what they need to survive. Here’s what they told us.

Why do humans need ghosts? And what do ghosts have to teach us?

Join us for an author talk and signing with Betsy Gaines Quammen for her new book, THIS HAUNTED LAND: Reckoning with Ghosts and the Stories that Shape America at 4:00. This event is part of the Original Thinkers , but it is free and open to the public, as are all OT events held at the library. No pass needed.

This Haunted Land investigates some of America’s most enduring legends and uncovers how ghost stories can illuminate some of the most unsettling parts of history. With curiosity, a touch of skepticism, and an open-hearted willingness to learn from the living and the dead, Betsy Gaines Quammen takes readers on a journey into haunted towns, forgotten lives, and abandoned places.

Join us for a talk and signing with Annette McGivney on Wednesday, September 30th at 5:30 pm! She’ll be presenting her new book, Plastc Shaman: The True Story of a Deadly Self-Help Retreat and America’s Misguided Quest for Wellness. Between the Covers Bookstore will be at the event selling books.

A spiritual quest turns into a fatal disaster in this gripping true crime investigation.

In October 2009, more than fifty people attended a $10,000-per-person wellness retreat led by a celebrity self-help guru. For these enlightenment seekers, their time in Sedona, Arizona, culminated in a fake Native American sweat lodge ceremony. Three of them would not make it out alive.

This tragedy exposes the dangerous truth about the booming two-trillion-dollar wellness sector, where promises of spiritual awakening and financial success often mask shocking practices underpinned by cultural appropriation and the commodification of nature.
