You don't need a fancy structure to store a lot of food through winter. This Root Cellar cost a total of $5 for spikes to fasten the cedar logs together. It's been in use for 17 years. The structure extends back about 8' into the hill and is about 5' high at the back. Walls are of vertical White Cedar logs (salvaged from a tornado that hit our farm) stuffed with Sphagnum Moss and then backfilled with soil. Sloping roof (also of cedar logs) has a repurposed pool liner to shed water. Screening keeps out critters and bags of leaves add insulation around the entrance. By: Connaught Nursery

Not sure if I explained to you, why we have chosen to stay in our offgrid home. When we were evacuated last winter and had to stay in a motel in town for several months, we learned that living in town just wasn't for us.
It was noisy, and unsafe, and my husband's dementia was aggravated, and he got agitated and wandered off (very scary!). Also our dog Cole is definitely not a city dog. He's a mountain dog, and needs to run free, not have be walked on leashes.
We had been looking at other properties, but found that every one would have been a step down. Not better for us.
My husband doesn't wander here, because he is at peace. And now we have finally found the help we need in the form of an In Home Supportive Services caregiver, who is also a very handy man.
He helps us with cutting and splitting firewood from our property and light carpentry projects both inside and outside. He also has a woodstove, so he knows what our needs are.
As hopeless as I was feeling before, it's such a good feeling to make progress in our solar setup. The game changer was when we finally got our generator connected to our big propane tank. That was done this year, and has freed us up in many ways!

I'm thinking about buying one of these. We only have a chest freezer, and an ice chest for refrigeration. This would be a step up, and their prices seem reasonable.
