The mission of the Sumter Opera House is to enrich the cultural lives of our community, neighbors, and visitors by providing diverse creative experiences.
The Sumter Opera House is a beautiful historic site with a rich past. Completed in 1895, it has served as an opera house, a music academy, a movie theatre, city offices, a meat market, barber shop, and even a jail. Still home to City Hall, many city departments and City Council chambers, the Sumter Opera House is once again presenting a performance series in an effort to contribute to downtown rev

Extra, extra 📰 We're bringing out the archives today. We've seen many chapters in our day!
Although originally completed in 1872, the theater was completely modernized in 1935. Hollywood legend Gary Cooper even sent a congratulatory message: "The motion picture industry is proud of the new Sumter Theatre."

Can we hear it for the incredible construction crew who's heading up our renovation? Wwe can't reiterate what an INCREDIBLE job that everyone at Hood Construction Company, Inc. has been doing.
Working in collaboration with Killis Almond Architects, this renovation has required every ounce of specialization.
We're amazed at all parties involved as they ensure this project comes to life with the highest level of care. THANK YOU! 🙏

Who was here for our Stage Door Series show with Gina Chavez in 2019? These shows actually took place with patrons ON the stage!
Gina has since gone on to become a Grammy-nominated artist and we are grateful that she graced our stage for an unforgettable evening of music!
Should we revive our Stage Door Series once we re-open?
A lot has changed since 1872, but a lot still remains the same. We're proud that the SOH still remains a hub for our community all these years later!

Swipe for progress! 😮 Our tech wing is getting a whole lot of love as construction steadily progresses.
With advanced capabilities built for our modern world, our tech department is overjoyed for the advanced offerings our theater will soon offer.
This wing will serve many purposes–loading dock, tech staffing, usher and artist holding spaces, technical and backstage storage, green room, and more office spaces on the second floor.
A BIG shout-out to Hood Construction Company, Inc. for being the best in the biz throughout this entire renovation project! 🚧

Our team had an incredible time at the League of Historic American Theatres 2026 conference in Indianapolis!
What is LHAT? 🤔 It's the largest gathering in North America for historic theaters and the communities who dedicate themselves to preserving them.
As an official site on the National Register of Historic Places, we feel that it's integral for the Sumter Opera House to be represented in these spaces!
There wasn't a moment to spare as we immersed ourselves in professional development sessions, panel discussions, networking opportunities, guided tours of other historic venues, and more.
A heartfelt THANK YOU to the organizers of this event and all of our industry friends who made this year's conference one for the books!
Our cups are full as we take this new-found knowledge back home to Sumter as we inch ever-closer to the later stages of our renovation 🚧
