On July 8, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud publicly for the very first time. For the first time, Americans heard the words that declared the colonies free and independent, proclaiming a new nation's commitment to liberty and self-government.

Today, 250 years later, we continue that tradition.
Join us today at 6:00 PM at the Sumter County Courthouse for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence as we continue celebrating America's 250th anniversary. Come hear the words that changed history and reflect on the ideals that continue to unite us.

🎨🇺🇸 Sumter250 Spotlight

On June 17 at Sumter High School, Sumter School District’s REACH Summer Showcase, students creatively honored the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
Through visual art and performance, students explored America’s founding story while honoring Sumter’s military community and its lasting legacy of service.
It was a powerful reminder of how the next generation connects with our past, reflects on our present, and helps carry our story forward.

History was made (and signed) at the Sumter Museum. 📝🇺🇸

Sumter County Council Chairman James T. McCain Jr. and Mayor David Merchant signed a Joint Proclamation recognizing Carolina Day on June 28, 2026, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the first major Patriot victory of the American Revolution.
