Research news: Are autoimmune encephalitis (AE) recovery measures missing cognitive decline outcomes?

🔬Most adults who survive AE are classified as having made a good recovery based on standard functional outcome measures. This Danish nationwide study was conducted to determine whether these standard measures accurately capture patients' true recovery, or whether they overlook deficits that only become apparent through detailed cognitive testing.

🥇 The MoCA test (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) correlated well with neuropsychological performance and, despite missing a proportion of people with NMDAR encephalitis, could be the bedside test of choice if a neuropsychologist is not readily available.

✅ The takeaway: Standard outcome measures alone are insufficient to identify long-term cognitive impairment after AE. Referral for full neuropsychological assessment remains the best way to detect cognitive problems long after acute AE.
