Thanks Sarah!
In 1904, University of Wisconsin President Charles Van Hise declared that he would, "never be content until the beneficent influence of the university reaches every family in the state.” This principle, that the knowledge of the universities should positively benefit the communities in which they reside, would come to be known as the Wisconsin Idea and it underlies many of Wisconsin’s greatest contributions to our country, including the pioneering research by UW Madison Economists that led to the creation of Social Security!
The impact of the Wisconsin Idea continues to be felt to this day, which I have personal experience with. When I was working on modernizing the vital services provided by the office of the Secretary of State, we received assistance from Masters students from UW-Madison’s Industrial & Systems Engineering Program. The work done by these students helped to build the foundation to make the Apostille and Authentication process more accessible, positively impacting the lives of thousands of Wisconsinites.
This is part of a series of posts celebrating Wisconsin’s role in . Be sure to stay tuned in throughout the week
