Plan for Rates & Expedited Options
While specific rates are difficult to quote in advance of a hurricane, predetermining an effective process for rates is considered a FreightLab best-in-class practice. Having these conversations with your third-party partners, carrier partners, and internal logistics teams can help avoid timely holdups and costly delays.
Here are a few things to consider when building out this process with external partners – Establish a unique identifier for all emergent event invoices

FREIGHTLAB FREIGHTLOOK!

Topic: Suez Canal

About 10% of world trade flows through the canal, which is particularly crucial for transporting oil. We have lots of things indicating a vulnerable supply chain at risk for disruptions, and now you put one more thing on top of that. Supply chains are volatile, and if you get a bump in one place, that is going to percolate through the system. The Suez situation could compound issues for a supply chain already under pressure from the pandemic and a surge in buying. Congested ports have led to container ships anchoring off the California coast, unable to dock and unload their goods. Shortages of semiconductors and rare-earth elements have plagued manufacturers of cars and other consumer products.
It becomes increasingly vital to have and maintain strong and strategic partnerships in our supply chains as alarms begin to resonate… ‘freight is sitting, and trucks are not,’ says Charlie Lane of FreightLab Company. As we close out the 1st quarter of 2021, the numbers begin to paint a sobering picture with staggering numbers regarding truckload volumes which currently reflect 10 loads to 1 truck in nearly 90% of the United States. As manufacturers (shippers & customers alike) prepare for quarter 2 of 2021, there doesn’t seem to be much expectation of change when it comes to truckload demands and could possibly see an increased request for capacity.
FreightLab continues to provide solid formulas leading to consistent success of their partners supply chains, “we are here day in and day out, communicating regularly to our customers which allows them to remain ahead of any would be bottlenecking,” says Omer Ramusevic, CEO of FreightLab Company.

FreightLab Formula for Success during Hurricane Season

As Mustang [also known as Hurricane] Sally rips through the southeast regions of the U.S., her 105 mph winds are huffing and puffing about the gulf region while dropping “4 months of rain in 4 hours” (30 plus inches of rainfall). With this going on, how can you remain prepared and on your toes in your supply chain keeping your from feeling on your heels during a volatile hurricane season?

As tropical storms and hurricanes continue to impact portions of North America, unsettling multiple municipalities with power outages, road closures, and flooding. Despite the impact, many businesses will strive to remain open and transportation across modes will continue operations with little disruption. Although the impact to supply chains from this storm may seemingly be minimal, it is important to make sure your business has a plan in place for hurricane season (June – November). In this blog, we will cover four things you should consider when building out an effective emergency response plan for your supply chain.

Create Emergency Protocols and Contact Lists – Communication is key during business as usual, and crucial during emergency events. The importance of having a designated person [or group of people] as main facilitators during this emergency time is your FreightLab Formula for success.

Develop an internal business plan, and make sure everyone knows that continuity and communication are key. You third-party partners may be involved in the development process [consulting purposes] or it may make more sense to share with external partners after the plan is developed and in place.
Review your normal process and procedures to determine if they need to be adjusted during such a catastrophic time and/or emergency event

Create a checklist from top to bottom, include and distribute this plan within your organizations [alternate locations, sister companies, etc] as well as your business partners (customers, third-party vendors, etc).

Consider Your Primary Origins and Destinations
FreightLab Forward thinking in important, take a look at your business and communicate with your customers to decide if your freight’s origins and destinations are potentially impacted by an emergency event. For example, you may be in the Midwest region, but your customer is located within the southeast region weathering the storm and faced with road delays, power outages, and other challenges that come with hurricane events. Exploring alternate options [different locations for your customer, warehousing your freight and/or shipping a bit later] and having flexibility will allow you to be informed and prepared for any disruptions, and saving [or minimizing] your supply chain from any delays or setbacks.

By reviewing the location(s) of your customers and suppliers and considering internal moves or transfers that may help alleviate the pressures of time constraints [needed materials], this will provide understanding to you and your business partners [customers, third-party partners, etc]. Communicating and aligning your business structure [internally and externally] will allow you to consider cost and service scenarios in advance.

Review You Commodity Type & Capacity Needs:

Regardless of where you are [located] and where your freight needs to go, there are always considerations when shipping freight. Depending on your product, demand may increase or decrease during hurricane season and with that knowledge your capacity needs may fluctuate as well. Discuss and communicate your product and volume with your FreightLab supply chain expert, we will walk you through the types of equipment your product requires and/or potential [specialized] needs that would affect cost and service. Working with an experienced and knowledgeable provider can help you avoid disruptions during times of crisis through the many services they provide.
Here are a few things to consider when building out this process with external partners –

Establish a unique identifier for all emergent event invoices
Define billing expectations and standard operation procedures (SOPs)

Define payment expectations and SOPs
Expedite protocols and approval hierarchy
Define expedite thresholds and specific approval personnel and SOPs

FreightLab Final Thoughts – Seasons come and hurricane blow [through], we understand there are processes for each season and are not created overnight. That is why it is so important to start and have these conversations now. No matter where you are in the process, FreightLab experts are here to partner with you and your team to ensure your supply chains continues to move forward in the midst of spiraling hurricane season, full of disruption and delays. We encourage you to reach out to us, we will keep you informed and collaborate together to form a plan of action that best fits your business model – FreightLab, logistics is a science and we have the formula for success.
