Juneteenth, observed on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a time to reflect, celebrate progress, and continue the pursuit of justice and equality.

The Mirowitz Center began celebrating our country’s upcoming birthday with a deep dive into some of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most iconic American masterpieces. Independent museum educator and lecturer Elana Kaplan guided us on a virtual tour of The Met’s renowned and ever-evolving American Wing, showcased on the Mirowitz Center’s 14-foot screen. Part of our “Celebrate America@250” programming, co-sponsored by AARP St. Louis.

Today’s Crafting Corner at the Mirowitz Center brought a little sunshine indoors as we created colorful sun catchers with Anna Lehrke. Each project reflected its maker’s unique style, resulting in a beautiful collection of one-of-a-kind creations. It was a wonderful morning!

Today at the Mirowitz Center, in partnership with Senior Planet from AARP, Trainer Daniel Landsbaum guided participants through the fascinating world of genealogy, highlighting websites, platforms, and free online resources that can help uncover family history. He also demonstrated how to access valuable research tools available through many public libraries.

It was a full house at the Mirowitz Center for a wonderful afternoon of music and memories! The Over-the-Hill Singers had the audience smiling, tapping their toes, and singing along as they performed a collection of timeless favorites. From start to finish, it was a delightful trip down memory lane enjoyed by all.
