As we wrap up Women in Sales month, I want to pause and honor the first woman to inspire my career: my mom.
✨ She went from being an underpaid and underappreciated teacher to becoming a Real Estate trailblazer. In the early '80s, with no Internet to make her life easier, she put in 50-60 hours a week building her own book of business.
And she wasn't working for her success alone. As the president of Sunflower Association of REALTORS, Inc. and Kansas Association of REALTORS® (Official), my mother also gave back to our community and the Real Estate community.
Her story is an enduring inspiration for me, and I'm honored to share it with you.

It's been a month! 💁🏼♀️ I had SO many rewarding exchanges this October as we discussed and celebrated .

There IS such a thing as being overqualified for a sales role.
Can you imagine a candidate who is willing to take a 25% reduction in pay and responsibility?
That's a red flag for me!
You can trust me on this one because I've been helping companies attract, screen, interview, and hire the best sales reps on the market for over 20 years.
No special hiring fairy dust needed…When someone applies for a job to which their resume indicates they're too qualified for, I address it head-on.
I just ask:
“Susan, based on your resume, and what you’ve accomplished so far in your sales career, I’m confused about why you applied for this position. Based on your past success, this would be a step back for you."
Here’s what I usually uncover and how that information impacts the next steps in the interview process:
❌ Their resume and the accomplishments listed are bu****it - PASS
❌ They can’t give you a clear and concise answer and your gut tells you they were fired - PASS
⚠️ They took too big a step change and need to take a step back in order to gain more sales skills - PROCEED WITH CAUTION
🟢 They want to change industries or sell a different type of product/service - PROCEED
🟢 They have personal or family reason for needing to take a step back - PROCEED

What separates the best from the rest?
Well…quite a lot, actually.

Are you more likely to ask for FORGIVENESS or PERMISSION? 🤔
In my upcoming book "Selling Your Way In," this is one of the powerful questions I present for understanding your sales approach.
It's not about right or wrong.
It's mostly about self-awareness.
And there's a follow-up question:
"Give me an example of a time that strategy bit you in the ass."
The answers help you identify whether your sales persona is a hunter or a farmer.
Hunters tend to ask for forgiveness, seizing opportunities boldly. Farmers, on the other hand, ask for permission, preferring a more cautious approach.
Each style has its place in sales.

How’s that impostor syndrome treating you these days? 😬
I learned to push it away with sales expert and best-selling author .
He challenged me to charge more for my consulting services when I was starting my business.
💪 But the thing with confidence is that you must build it continuously.
