It’s one thing to see a freeway project from the ground. It’s another to see just how much work is taking shape when you get a look from above.

These photos give you a look at the 2100 North project in Lehi, where W.W. Clyde & Co. is working alongside Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction and the Utah DOT to build a new freeway-to-freeway connection between I-15 and Mountain View Corridor.

There’s a lot going into 2.8 miles of new freeway, from major earthwork and bridges to new trail connections and improved access for the surrounding community.

And there’s a lot of people behind it.

100 years ago, it started with a four-mule team, a Fresno scraper and a road west of Wendover.

Building a bridge over I-15 is a big job. Building it while keeping traffic moving takes a different approach.

For the Pioneer Crossing project, W.W. Clyde & Co. was part of the joint venture that delivered Utah’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange on I-15. At the time, it was only the third DDI in the United States.

The concept itself was innovative. Instead of crossing traffic through a traditional interchange, a DDI briefly moves traffic to the opposite side of the road, reducing conflict points and allowing vehicles to move through the interchange more efficiently.

But the bridge construction was just as remarkable.

Rather than building the bridge directly over I-15 and creating a long-term disruption for drivers, the massive bridge spans were constructed beside the interstate. Then, using self-propelled modular transporters, the spans were essentially driven into position.

Each span weighed more than 2,000 tons.

The approach allowed the team to install each span during a single eight-hour traffic closure, minimizing the impact on the thousands of people traveling I-15. The project also eliminated 35,000 square feet of retaining wall and saved UDOT approximately $17 million.

It was a project that asked a simple question: Is there a better way to build this?

The answer changed the way Utah thought about interchanges and bridge construction.

100 years of building means more than looking back at what we've built. It's about carrying that same spirit of innovation into whatever comes next.

Jordanelle Dam Hydropower Plant | 2006–2008

In 2006, the Central Utah Water Conservancy District commissioned W.W. Clyde & Co. to construct a hydropower plant at the base of Jordanelle Dam near Heber City.

The project brought a new challenge: building a powerhouse and installing more than $5 million in owner-furnished equipment while keeping the existing outlet works in operation.

When completed, the 12-megawatt facility became a renewable source of energy capable of producing enough electricity to power approximately 8,000 homes each year.

The project also earned recognition, including Intermountain Contractor magazine’s 2008 Best Civil/Infrastructure Project award. W.W. Clyde Project Manager Dustin Olson was also named Associated General Contractors of Utah’s Utility Division Project Manager of the Year for his work on the project.

Nearly 20 years later, the project remains a great example of what happens when experience, innovation and a willingness to take on complex work come together.
