In 1928, Harley-Davidson considered buying the Cleveland Motorcycle Company which made lightweight singles and large four cylinders. The Cleveland offered a ready-made competitor to Indian’s Ace-based fours. Harley eventually rejected the offer to buy and just less than a year later the Wall Street Crash of 1929 was the final nail in the coffin for the Cleveland Motorcycle Company. Today the rarity of this most advanced four cylinder of its time can be see here at the Legends Motorcycle Museum.

The Four was introduced as a prestige motorcycle that cost as much as a new Pontiac. It was named for its inline four-cylinder engine, as descendant of the 1911 Henderson. William Henderson sold out to Schwinn in 1917, then started the Ace company in 1919, planning to build a lighter four-cylinder bike, he was killed testing a new Ace Four in 1922. Arthur Lemon ran the company until 1927, when Indian purchased the ownership of the name, rights, and production facilities of the Ace Motor Corporation and moved it to Springfield to market the motorcycle as the Indian Ace for one year.
In 1928, the Indian Ace was replaced by the Indian 401, a development of the Ace designed by Arthur O.
Inside the Legends Motorcycle Museum are some of the rarest four cylinders in the world.
