During our September HCAT Meeting, we were joined by Learn to Cope, a local organization that serves as a peer-led network for families navigating addiction and recovery. Through in-person and virtual support groups (English and Spanish), LTC creates a safe, judgment-free space for people who are navigating some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Director of Learn to Cope, Peter Babineou, and Regional Manager, Magda Colón began by giving a brief overview of their programming (see attached flyer), followed by a panel discussion with members of LTC.

What made this conversation so meaningful was hearing directly from the people who have lived it. Panelists shared how Learn to Cope helped them feel less alone, find validation, navigate systems that felt overwhelming, cope with grief and guilt, and learn how to support a loved one while still creating healthy boundaries for themselves.

When asked how their perspective on substance use disorder has shifted since coming to LTC, panelists spoke about moving from fear into understanding, learning to recognize and celebrate the small wins, becoming better listeners, and understanding that recovery ultimately has to be a choice made by the person struggling.

And when asked what they would want providers and people on the front lines to remember, the panel offered simple but powerful reminders:

“Treat people with respect and dignity.”

“Take the time.”

“When you’re dealing with people, you may be dealing with them in their darkest moments.”

“Have these conversations with your kids. Let’s reduce the stigma.”

“Thank you.”

These conversations create ripple effects. There is something deeply healing about being able to speak openly, be heard without judgment, and realize that you do not have to go through it all alone. Everyone who was able to sit and listen to this conversation, walked away feeling hopeful and inspired.

Thank you to Learn to Cope, for the incredible work that takes place within your agency. The care that you pour into your members is a true demonstration of compassion.

Lastly, thank you to the LTC members who shared their stories with us. Your honesty, vulnerability, and wisdom are appreciated beyond measure. 💜

Open conversations about substance use, our experiences, and our mental health matter. When we create spaces where people feel safe to be honest, ask for help, share their experiences, and connect with others, we strengthen our communities.
