In 2006, Portland nurse Susan Kuhnhausen came home to find a hitman waiting inside her house. The man, Edward Dalton Haffey, had been hired by her estranged husband and attacked her with a claw hammer. Susan fought back hard, overpowered him during the struggle, and eventually got him into a chokehold.

While holding him down, she demanded, “Tell me who sent you and I’ll call you a f*ing ambulance!” Haffey died before naming who had hired him, but investigators later uncovered the murder-for-hire plot. Susan survived, and her estranged husband was eventually convicted for arranging the attack. It remains one of Oregon’s most unbelievable stories of survival, betrayal, and self-defense.
