For anyone interested in learning how to support our incoming Afghan refugees, (or others for that matter) resettlement agencies around the country will be desperate over the next year for volunteers to help families get oriented to their new communities. Regardless of your politics, these folks are here with little to no understanding of how to be here. If you're having a hard time understanding the need, imagine being picked up today and dropped off in another country where you've never been, and where you don't understand the language, to permanently live. Having a friendly, welcoming person or family available to help you understand basic things like using the grocery store, bank, bus system, etc... can be life changing. So, there will be many ways to get involved if you'd like to help folks know how best to be in our country while also learning and connecting with people from other parts of the world! What a great activity to do as a family, to commit to one family and walk alongside them as you all learn together. If we all do that... imagine.🌼 Look for a resettlement agency where you are, today!

Are we truly "all" in this "together?" Yesterday, my
hometown of Springfield, MO in the US went into Stay-at-home status. However, many in our community have nowhere to stay at home. The statement that "we're all in this together" has different meaning when I look out from this viewpoint. Before I say, again, that we're all going to get through this together, I'm going to check myself - am I actually contributing in some way to making that happen? Who is taking responsibility for those who are vulnerable for entirely different reasons than health or age? In huge ways, it's regular folks that are taking responsibility for the wellness of our communities. Because I'm currently quarantined, I am doing the only thing I know to do for now - share stories. I've started interviewing those who are either experiencing this crisis as someone without shelter, or those working on the frontlines to support those folks. First up: Pastor Christie Love of The Connecting Grounds Church. This is not a post to incite debate about public policy, so please reserve those comments for the appropriate outlets. This is merely an opportunity to add to the conversation about the broad spectrum of vulnerability in crisis, community wellness and responsibility, and how we can do what makes the most sense for our own participation.
