Clinical Trial Development, Transparency, and Medical Information: Gaining the Trust of Patients 06/11/2018

Repost from: DrugInfoAssn: This article (written by Sandra Blumenrath) summarizes key takeaways from sessions in “Topic F: What Can Stakeholders Expect from Clinical Trial (Development), Transparency, and Medical Information?" Merete Jorgenson shares her feedback on the advancing requirements that accompany the primary challenge of data security.
"Research participants drive medical product development. Without an ability to gain the trust of patients and effectively recruit research participants, there will be no clinical trials and no new medicines."

Clinical Trial Development, Transparency, and Medical Information: Gaining the Trust of Patients Data transparency in clinical trials is key. Allowing for public scrutiny, for example, establishes trust and confidence in clinical trials among patients.

Gene Therapy Looks Promising for Transfusion-Dependent β-Thalassemia 05/07/2018

Many of our clients are at the forefront of developing life-changing medicines for the future... This week we want to highlight BluebirdBio for their success with the new drug, LentiGlobin in treating TDT (Transfusion-Dependent β-Thalassemia) through gene therapy.
Individuals who have the genetic mutation causing TDT must undergo consistent blood transfusions to cope with the disease.
In this trial, observations stretch a two-year timeframe-- the collected data shows that the patients with TDT “were able to maintain independence from transfusion without unexpected or unmanageable side effects,” said Dr. Alexis Thompson, Head of Hematology and Director of the Comprehensive Thalassemia Program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and one of the lead authors of the NEJM paper.
She continued in her statement to the New England Journal of Medicine that, “These results suggest that gene therapy could become an effective treatment for TDT.”
