Michael Lachenmeyer for State Rep

Somewhere along the campaign trail, I was told that it's not what you do in victory but in defeat that reveals who you really are. Well, I want you all to leave this experience full of hope rather than despair. Over the past year and a half, we did something groundbreaking. We challenged established power and made calls for reform that cannot be ignored. Regardless of which politicians win or lose, the people of the 12th Hampden District deserve a government that is accountable and transparent and a Commonwealth that is affordable. Delivering on that premise has always been my greatest ambition, and I know I am not alone.

Thank you all for being part of this wonderful journey with me. Whether you donated, volunteered, or voted to support my candidacy and this campaign, thank you! To my family, friends, and partner, thank you! To the organizations and staffers who believed in me and fought for a shared vision of a better future, thank you!

From day one, I knew this would be an uphill battle. Massachusetts is notorious for maintaining its incumbents, and last night that trend held with only one Democratic state rep. being unseated amid 31 contested races (and he was indicted by the federal government on corruption charges last week). And yet, in moments of adversity when we feel that change just is not possible and cannot happen, we must look back to history and the examples of our forebears. In 1832, Abraham Lincoln ran for state representative in Illinois and lost, placing 8th out of 13 candidates. Yet, in 1834, he ran again and won. In 1858, he lost a Senate race, and in 1860 he won the presidency. History, both national and local are studded with many such examples.

All that to say, I have not given up, and neither should you. Last night I ended my speech chanting the word "fight," and I mean it. We live in a time that demands courage, collective action, and urgency. Do not underestimate your own power. Each and every one of us has the ability to make a difference.

And finally, to Rep. Puppolo, congratulations on your victory. I hope that you will make good decisions on behalf of our community in the coming years. Should we run against each other again, I'm also hoping for a debate!
