Season two is coming up and I want Hooligan to be better than we were last year. We learned a lot that first season. As the room gets bigger, we as coaches have to keep getting better too.
We’re splitting novice and advanced this year so practices have more structure. Novice is going to be heavy on the basics until they actually understand them. Advanced will be pushed at a faster pace and work on thinking more while they wrestle.
Our advanced wrestlers will be on the mat on novice nights too, so they’ll be drilling the basics four nights a week. They’ll also learn to help coach the newer kids. When you have to explain a move to somebody else, you understand it better yourself and remember it when it’s your turn to wrestle.
Practices are going to be hard. We’re going to drill, condition, and expect them to keep working when they’re tired. Kids can do hard things. I think sometimes we don’t give them enough credit for what they’re capable of.
That’s what I want this room to be about this season. Getting better, helping each other get better, and seeing what you can do when you don’t quit on yourself. If you’ve been thinking about bringing your kid in, message me.
The car ride home after taking a loss you were supposed to win.
The Monday practice after.
Getting beat over and over and showing up anyway.
The practices that make your body feel like jello.
Being afraid but doing it anyways.
This is what forges wrestlers, this is the definition of iron sharpens iron.
This is where growth takes place. Not in the comfortable moments.
Tired? Do it anyways.

Going into our second season at Hooligan we’re really focusing on development and growth. Our first year was about getting started, learning and building a foundation. Now we want to build off of it and keep getting better.
As we grow I want our coaching to grow with it. We’re going to be harder on the kids, practices are going to get tougher and we’re going to expect more. But we also want to make sure we’re doing a better job developing each kid instead of just throwing more moves at them.
We’re splitting Novice and Advanced this year for that reason.
Novice is going to be on a pretty strict progression. Basics first. Stance, motion, positioning, shots, finishes, defense, bottom work and actually understanding those positions before we move on. I want our newer kids to have a really solid foundation they can build off of for years.
Advanced will be a different pace. A lot more hand fighting, building off the basics they already know, more advanced technique, harder drilling, more live wrestling and overall tougher practices.
We’re also going to put more focus on the mental side. Wrestling is hard and some kids struggle more mentally than physically. Confidence, dealing with losses, pressure, being tired, getting frustrated and learning to keep going when things aren’t going your way. That’s part of development too.
We’re also introducing WrestlingIQ this season. It’ll help us with payments, communication, video review and give parents, wrestlers and coaches an easier way to keep everything together.
We learned a lot in year one. There are things we did well and things we know we can do better.
I don’t expect the kids to come back better every year if we as coaches aren’t willing to do the same.
Better coaching. Better development. Tougher practices. Higher expectations.
First year we built it now we build on it.
