It has been a very busy but special month at SYK. We hosted or annual spring gasshuku (the 3rd hosted at our dojo). Leading up to gasshuku Sensei O & Senpai Alexis got an amazing week of training with Sensei Charles Tootle This was made possible be Senseis Alex Hennen & Gabriel Herriott teaching classes affording Sensei O & Senpai Alexis the opportunity for one one training & preparation. A big thank you.

At grading Sensei Jason Krohn , Sensei Dave Tebrugge, & Sensei O obtained their formal rank of Yondan (4th degree) & Senpai Alexis gained her Nidan (2nd degree). Lots of hard work, lots of sweat, & lots of determination paid off.

After gasshuku SYK classes were a refresher of Gasshuku lessons of Kata and bo kobudo. After 17 of the past 21 days on the dojo floor Sensei O & Senpai Alexis earned a weekend to heal up & rest. Thank You to everyone who attended & helped with Gasshuku it was amazing.

Reminder:

Gasshuku starts tomorrow. It starts promptly at 9:30AM. Please arrive before 9:30 to check with Mrs. Overby at the table to ensure you have completed and signed your forms & to pay any outstanding fees if necessary.

Sunday 4/19- 9am-12 Grading only- Half Gym directly across from the main dojo.

5pm-After grading and Sensei Overby takes a good shower + ice & a nap, he & his family along with Springfield Dojo adult students will host a cookout for all the of town Monday travellers at his house. Food sides and some adult beverages provided.

Fun times watching the UFC fights while hanging out with UFC/Pride legend Gary Goodridge. It was cool to hear how combat sports has progressed throughout the years. We watched some of his old fights and he broke them down and told us the behind the scenes stories. He is a very humble & kind man. We hope he visits again soon.

Why we are changing the name of our karate organization explained right after the weekly summary.

This week was fun at SYK we continued on with Kata work in Jr. karate with some bunkai. In adult class it was Kata work and the three bunkais of omote, ura, and honto. Of course we finished the week Thursday night adult class with with our signature kihon ido and kihon ido ni up and down the floor with intense spirit work in between. According to my watch between adult and jr. Karate I burned 1328 calories and got my heart rate up to 185 at one point, so I would say we had a great karate workout

Now why is our home organization Okinawan Goju Ryu Kenkyu Kai changing the organization's name to
Koryu Koshu Kai "Old Style of Ancient Methods" with the philosophy of On ko Chi Shin "learn from the old to understand the new".

1. Because we have evolved for the better and we are moving into the future still maintaining tradition.

2. We use traditional methods & training for modern day functional, practical, and tactical karate that works for self defense and improving the practioner.

3. Another organization was allowed to use the OGRKK name many years ago and it causes confusion.

4. Sensei Steve Wilson has been blessed to train with amazing Okinawan legendary Senseis and karateka. Instead of us getting just one persons perspective on Okinawan Goju Ryu we get a compilation of extensive training, research, and real life tested techniques from several of the legendary prqctioners.

5. This is Sensei and our organization taking the old ways of training and adapting them to needs and functions of the world we live in today.

What better way to carry Okinawan Goju Ryu karate into the future. I am so excited for our future and our next generation of students. For the younger students, as much as this is for us, it is very much for you, many of the dojo instructors and Senior instructors are in our 40s, 50s, 60's etc. We thrive seeing all of you develop and it warms our hearts knowing that us developing you with these skills and knowledge will carry our style and ways into the future.

It's been a great year so far. We had grading a few weeks ago and a lot of hard working young people did an amazing job. Everyone passed and graded well. Enjoy the pics( Chance is not pictured because his rank was awarded in adult class).

We have been working hard on ippon kumite, renzokus, and of course spirit work. Tonight was the exclamation point, we did 1 minute 30 second kumite with no rest in between while we did strength and spirit exercises, right back into kumite. After about 15 sets we took a very short break and worked renzokus and kata. Very good work everyone!!

Next week we will discuss proper dojo etiquette with some of the newer students and continue with the hard work
