The SSO is the largest professional orchestra in Massachusetts outside of Boston.
Each season, we produce classical and pops performances, plus educational, cultural & outreach programs that benefit the communities in which we serve. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra performed its first concert in 1944, at its current home - Springfield Symphony Hall, which was originally built as the Municipal Auditorium. That performance received great reviews and was even recorded by the Office of War Information for rebroadcast to our troops overseas. Today, the SSO is the largest professional symphony orchestra in Massachusetts, outside of Boston. It consists of over 80 musicians from the NE region of the United States and Canada, and holds many performances in a given season - as either the full orchestra or in ensemble formats. SSO concerts are typically recorded and re-broadcast over New England Public Radio (88.5FM), the area NPR station. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is also the parent organization of two youth orchestras - the Springfield Youth Sinfonia (formally Young Person's Philharmonia) and the Springfield Youth Orchestra (formally Young Person's Symphony). Both of these ensembles offer young musicians a chance to play in a full orchestra, an option not offered in many schools. A new space. A new season. The Next Movement of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. 🎶
We were honored to welcome Congressman Richard E. Neal to 1350 Main Street for a tour of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s new office space and a conversation about the exciting momentum surrounding the SSO.
Coming off a tremendously successful season, the Symphony is entering another important chapter under the leadership of President & CEO Heather Caisse-Roberts.
The SSO is finishing its move into its new downtown home, preparing for the 2026/27 The Next Movement season, and embarking on the public search for its next Music Director. The Symphony describes this season as a defining moment in its history, with Music Director finalists taking the podium throughout the season.
And 1350 Main Street represents much more than a new place to work.
With the support of board member and 1350 Main Street owner Evan Plotkin, the space creates new possibilities for bringing people together, strengthening partnerships, expanding educational and youth programming, and creating even more ways for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra to connect with the community beyond the stage at Symphony Hall.
We are grateful to Congressman Neal for taking the time to see what is being built and to discuss the important role arts and culture continue to play throughout Springfield and Western Massachusetts.
