Virgil Ward is an icon fishing world. He was one of the early TV pioneers of the sport and a solid bass angler. I never had a chance to meet him, but I felt like I knew him and watching him every week on TV as a kid.

Had a fun day fishing with 11 year old Emmett of the Stratford Missouri middle school fishing team today using the old-school technique of flipping flooded bushes today.

Beats jighead minnow pinging any day.

Here’s a few of my favorite summertime, crankbaits.

Let me share a very good tip with you guys for summertime crank bait fishing. Speed of retrieve is critical. In warmer water you’ve got to create a reaction strike.

This comes from using a medium fast stop and go retrieve and constantly trying to deflect your crank bait off of some object, whether it be wood or rock.

My favorite summertime crank bait is the one you see in the bottom of the picture which is the megabass super Z2. It’s deadly on hot water bass.

Bill Dance retired at the top of his game after a very short career with Bassmaster in the 1970s to pursue his television career. I’ve always wondered a lot how dominant he would’ve been if he had not went to television and focused on professional fishing tournaments. I’m sure he would’ve set all kinds of records.

This was my rookie year on the Bassmaster tournament Trail and my very first press article. Seems like 1 million years ago yet seems like just yesterday.

This is the exact lure that I won my very first bass tournament on back in 1981 on Grand Lake Oklahoma.
