Every property line in Arkansas traces back to a single stone placed in an Arkansas County swamp in 1815. 📋 The Louisiana Purchase Survey Marker is the documented base point from which every land survey in Arkansas and Missouri was measured, and it sits in a bottomland swamp in one of the least-visited state parks in Arkansas, quietly holding the legal foundation of every piece of property in the state.
The documented surveying history of the Louisiana Purchase territory required the establishment of a single base point from which all subsequent land surveys would be measured before any of the territory could be legally sold or settled. Government surveyors placed that base point in 1815 at the intersection of the fifth principal meridian and the baseline in what is now Arkansas County, marking it with a stone in a swamp that was then largely inaccessible wilderness. Every township, range, and section description on every property deed in Arkansas ultimately references back to that single documented stone. The marker was lost for decades, rediscovered, and is now protected as a state historic site. Most Arkansans have never heard of it. 📋
