Inflation Reduction Act has implemented a $2,000 drug cap to Medicare enrollees. This is at a cost of 65% to insurance companies once cap is hit, compared to 25% before cap. In 2024, if a person is taking a name brand drug that retails for $800, they would be paying an average of a $45 copay, resulting in a cost of just under $1,000 on the year. With the increase cost to insurance companies, they all have been forced to go to coinsurance for name brand Rx, rather than fixed copays. So, in 2025, will pay approximately $160-$180 per month for the same Rx, and will hit the $2k cap.
PLEASE READ:
Clarification on the Inflation Reduction Act in regards to Medicare Rx plans. There was a $2000 cap put on Rx for seniors. As a part of this program, insurance companies will be required to cover 65% of medication costs above the $2000 threshold. This increased cost to insurance companies has caused a reduction of benefits to all Medicare recipients. Plus, insurance companies providing stand alone drug plans have announced that most plans will not be paying insurance agents for new plans, with one company (Wellcare) also saying they won’t be paying renewals on existing business. A small percentage of seniors go over $2000 of Rx expense on the existing plan. Reality is that the cap will only slightly help a small percentage of Medicare recipients, but literally every Medicare recipient will be taking reduction of benefits in 2025 and insurance agents will be losing a lot of money in renewal commissions (while still servicing those policies). Politicians brag about creating the cap, but reality is the plan has literally hurt everyone associated with Medicare Plans.
To all the people that have heard the news that Mercy put out a statement saying they will not have any Anthem plans in network next year. This is not a done deal and the contract is still in negotiation. According to our reps, they feel this is just a negotiating, move by Mercy to put pressure on Anthem and their contract negotiations. Also, according to our reps, they are very confident that Mercy will be in network with Anthem next year. Stay tuned.
