Rotary Park Pollinator Garden update. July 30, 2025 - Eight months ago, we embarked on a transformative journey, converting 1600 square feet of turf into a thriving haven for pollinators. Following the removal of turf, mulching, and planting native species of pollinator perennials in May, the garden has flourished under perfect growing conditions. A combination of rain, heat, and humidity has sparked an explosion of growth, with eight species now in bloom. Most notably, our milkweed has successfully attracted the majestic Monarch, our State Insect, and the nursery is now teeming with new life. We're thrilled to report our first Monarch caterpillar, and eagerly anticipate the next generation. Rotary Park Pollinator Garden update— June 21, Summer Solstice Day. It has been a month since the 300 plants were planted in our plot near the football field at Rotary Park. Timely rains and cooler weather have created great growing conditions. Today, one of our Penstemons showed its first bloom in the bed, the first of many ahead. Susan Helm demonstrated proper watering technique on a hot morning, recommending seven seconds at the base of each plant followed by an overall watering of the bed before the midday sun takes over. We appear to have only one deceased plant, and the fence is keeping the local herbivores from eating the others. Susan tracks the soil moisture and rain, letting us know when the plants need high-quality Springfield water. Ed Hart from Westside Rotary and Brian Barstead from Sunrise Rotary helped tend the hose today. Stop by and see how Rotary's local People of Action are working together to support the environment and educate the community about growing a pollinator garden. This is the 11th Pollinator Garden in Springfield Parks and the most ambitious to date, funded by a District Grant from the West Central Illinois District of Rotary and the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, entirely donated by Rotarians throughout West Central Illinois.
