The Court Square Fountain is constructed in 1876. It would be built with funds donated by Daniel B. Wesson of Smith and Wesson Fi****ms. It is still functioning after 149 years of quenching the thirst of area residents.

Evan Plotkin | New chapter for downtown Springfield ... education breathes life into Class A office building (Commentary) From my perspective as both a property owner and a longtime stakeholder in Springfieldās downtown, this educational adaptation represents more than just a solution to vacancy issues ā itās a reimagining of what our urban office buildings can be.

Our neighborhood in the old days.
We are mainly looking at the east side of Main Street, starting with the First National Bank, first building on the right. Court Square is the open air section immediately to your left. I have never seen this great photo before, I always get so excited to find a truly new image. The two buildings just past the First National Bank were most certainly built around 1830, considering they only have 3 stories. I believe that 5-6 of the buildings on the east side(right), although of Main Street, still exist, although their fronts have been drastically altered. I would date this photo to the 1890's.
