A different game. Different rules. A different question.
Most of us learned to play before we knew we were playing. We answered "how are you?" with the answer the room expected. We performed wellness. We accepted growth as the only direction.
Rob Husband's new essay is for anyone who's started to ask which game we're actually playing – and what the rules might look like if we wrote them ourselves.

There's a look people give you when you give an honest answer they weren't ready for.
Rob Husband has spent years collecting that look – after a simple question like "how are you doing" results in him sharing how he's terrified by how little we learn from our own catastrophic failures.
For a long time he thought he was the one who'd missed the briefing – the one where everyone else memorised the rules of the field we're all supposedly playing on.
Now he thinks the briefing was the problem.

This weekend I went camping in Northumbria with my youngest daughter and we visited Lindisfarne. I have often heard this described as a thin place and it certainly felt like that, some liminal space that sits between land, sea and sky, a place. The idea of Thin Places has always intrigued me, they are often described as somewhere where the divide between us and a 'something other' feels a little less definite than normal. For me, these places appear in two very different ways: one is in nature, the other when I am reading and reflecting on what it means to connect with source, the energy we all come from. A few years ago I was sitting in a pub waiting for a couple of friends to arrive. I was reading a chapter from The Nature of Consciousness by Rupert Spira. He was exploring the idea that we are all connected to everything, that separation is an illusion. As I sat reading, I had the distinct experience of any divide between me and everyone else in the pub disappearing; we were all different expressions of the same thing. I have experienced this a few times, and each time I feel deep peace. I wonder where your Thin Places are?

I love talking to people about the stories that shape our lives . I am amazed that so often these stories remain unexamined, we live as if they are all 'true' and unmovable. At we love to explore these personal and cultural stories. Why? so we can understand better how they inform our choices and behaviours and impact our emotions and well-being. We are deep into our second series of the podcast where we have been exploring our Myths of Progress. Would you like to spend some time exploring your myth of progress? Join us for a 'couch session' on the 27th of February.

This Series examines the stories we tell ourselves or have integrated from our families, cultures, belief systems and how they shape our reality. Every couple of weeks we launch a new episode. This one features myself and Rob Husband as a way of introducing ourselves to you. Episode 2 will feature the magical and inspiring Eva Elias.

OnBeingHuman Podcast On Being Human is a space to tell and hear stories of being human without any prerequisite to change or be the best version of ourselves. It is a place where we share humanity with others and connect in both the mundane and the sublime. rhusband.substack.com

Over the past few years, so many of us have found that cold water swimming, walking, being in nature, spending a night wild camping... all of these are ways of removing ourselves from the centre of our own lives, of getting some perspective. How do you find new ways of looking, a fresh perspective?
