Ever wonder what it takes to produce the perfect popcorn? 🧐🌽 On Janie’s Farm, it takes a lot of time and care every step of the way! For example, instead of using the big combine to harvest popcorn, Farmer Harold rents an old-fashioned 3-row picker that carefully removes the ears from the stalks, and then feeds them into the harvest wagon. He uses the 3-row picker because the combine damages some kernels, meaning they won't pop. 🚜 Here are a few of the other things we do differently than most popcorn producers: 🍿 Harold harvests popcorn in the morning because the higher humidity means there will be less breakage and waste during the process. 🍿 Immediately after the harvest, Harold takes the ears of popcorn to the dryer, and loads them in. Our Butterfly White Popcorn filled one of the 4 large bins, and Harold monitors them until they reach the optimal 14% moisture, which is perfect for popping. 🍿 Then he takes the ears out of the bin and brings them to the sheller, which gently removes the kernels from the cobs. 🍿 After that, the popcorn kernels go to ProHarvest, our professional cleaning facility down the road, where all dust and bits of stalk or leaves or other foreign material are removed. 🍿 Harold says that this whole process is painstaking, and very different from what most popcorn producers do. But our slow, multi-step process: from the gentle morning harvest, to drying, to shelling, to cleaning — is what we do to make sure you get the very highest quality popcorn — good to the last pop!
