I can't believe we have so much snow. I have shoveled 4 times of at least 3 inches

I've visited numerous homes, and approximately 10-20% had subpar work done by previous contractors. This is where my expertise comes in - to provide solutions and ensure satisfaction. If you're unhappy with a recent project, I can assist by identifying a corrective solution or creating a scope for the original contractor to rectify the issues.p

🎬 The 5 DIY Mistakes That Cost Homeowners
“If you’re a homeowner who likes to do your own repairs and upgrades, this postcould save you tens of thousands of dollars — because I’m about to show you the five DIY mistakes I see destroy homes all across Springfield and Western Mass.”
“I’m George from The DIYist, and I work in construction. These aren’t internet tips — these are the real mistakes that cause inspections to fail, insurance claims to get denied, and houses to lose value.”
“Let’s get into it.”

Mistake #1 — Skipping Permits
“This one gets people in serious trouble.”
“A lot of homeowners think permits are just government nonsense. They’re not. They protect you.”
“In Massachusetts, if you do electrical, plumbing, structural work, or finish a basement without a permit, and something goes wrong — your insurance company can legally refuse to pay.”
“I’ve seen people do beautiful basement remodels, then have to rip everything out because it wasn’t inspected.”
“If you’re touching wiring, plumbing, or structure — pull the permit. It’s cheaper than tearing your house apart later.”

Mistake #2 — Removing Walls That Are Holding the House Up
“This is one of the scariest ones.”
“People think a wall is just a wall… until their ceiling starts sagging six months later.”
“In New England, especially in older Springfield homes, walls often carry weight even if they don’t look like they do.”
“Cracks, sticking doors, uneven floors — that’s what happens when you remove something structural without knowing it.”
“Before you knock anything down, you need to know what’s load-bearing. Guessing can cost you your entire house.”

Mistake #3 — Dangerous Electrical Work
“Electrical is where DIYers get confident… and houses burn down.”
“I constantly see: • overloaded circuits
• wrong wire sizes
• no GFCI protection
• and back-stabbed outlets that fail”
“That stuff doesn’t explode right away — it fails slowly, heats up, and then one day your wall is on fire.”
“If you’re not 100% sure how to wire something, stop and get it checked. Electricity doesn’t forgive mistakes.”
Mistake #4 — Bathrooms and Waterproofing
“This one destroys more homes than termites.”
“Tile is not waterproof.
Grout is not waterproof.
Cement board is not waterproof.”
“Water goes through all of it.”
“If you don’t properly waterproof a shower, the water rots the framing behind the wall. You won’t see it until it’s too late.”
“That’s how $10,000 bathroom remodels turn into $40,000 repairs.”

Mistake #5 — Doing Things in the Wrong Order
“This one wastes insane amounts of money.”
“People put in:
flooring before drywall
cabinets before plumbing
trim before paint”
“Then they damage brand-new work and have to redo it.”
“Construction has an order for a reason. When you skip steps, you pay twice.”
Wrap-Up
“DIY is powerful. It can save you huge money — but only if you do it right.”
“If you want to learn real-world, contractor-level home improvement, subscribe to The DIYist. I show you how to protect your house, not just how to make it look pretty.”
“Drop a comment if you’ve made any of these mistakes — you’re not alone — and I’ll see you in the next post.”

I have 3 daughters again.

If I had to prioritize, I would choose my kitchen over my deck, as the kitchen is a year-round space, whereas the deck is primarily utilized during the summer months.

Would you rather do your deck or kitchen with your tax return?
