Trish McAdams, executive director of the southwest Missouri Girls on the Run, was the guest speaker for the LCS November meeting. She defines Girls on the Run, a national nonprofit established in 2007, as a physical activity-based positive youth development program.

McAdams graduated from Missouri State University in 1984 with a degree in accounting, and she got jobs in both the private and public sectors in accounting. She later got a master's degree from MSU in Nonprofit and Civic Leadership.

Her advice for LCS interns: Be open to change. What you think you may do post-grad is liable to change, and that's okay.

In her presentation, she asked the room for traits of good leaders. She said good leaders are self-aware, good listeners, open-minded, empathetic, vulnerable, and adaptable.

Serving others is what LCS is all about. Whether you're sweating doing manual labor to build a home, hunched over a laptop for a social media campaign or engaged in a phone call with a client, LCS interns are putting their all into serving the Springfield community.

Lance O'Neal visited LCS interns to speak about his experiences in life and the nonprofit sector. O'Neal is a financial advisor by trade and also serves as the board president for Boys and Girls Club in Springfield.

At the Wednesday LCS meeting, O'Neal told students there are four traits in a great leader:

Confidence. When you walk into a room do not worry about being the smartest person there.

Patience. Things rarely work out perfectly the first time around. Therefore, keep a level head.

Humility. Everyone makes mistakes. Being transparent and owning up to them only makes people look up to you more.

Respect. That goes for yourself and the people around you!

LCS intern Kayla Curry traverses the tightrope at the Leadership Ranch in Republic, MO, while her teammates spot her from all sides.

The Leadership Ranch is a challenge course that builds teambuilding skills. The intern orientation this year was one filled with emerging friendships and leaning something new while starting the year off strong.
