This Fairfax Station home has a fresh new look with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingles in Williamsburg Gray. The blend of charcoal, soft gray, and subtle warmer tones complements the brick exterior, blue shutters, and white trim beautifully.

And there's a lot behind what you see here: repaired decking, new dormer trim, updated flashing, improved ventilation, reflashed skylights, and a complete Owens Corning Platinum Roofing System. Even the white drip edge was selected to coordinate cleanly with the home's exterior trim.

The result is a beautiful roof. The work underneath it is what makes the transformation complete.

Why would we remove a working attic fan when installing a new roof? 🤔🏠

Because more exhaust isn't automatically better ventilation.

On this Fairfax Station project, the existing attic fan was removed, and the opening was closed with new plywood. We added intake ventilation over the garage, with ridge ventilation providing exhaust at the top of the roof.

The goal is a coordinated airflow path through the attic, not several exhaust systems that could compete with one another.

We also retained and reflashed the home's existing skylights and addressed the flashing details throughout the new roof.

The little things aren't really little when they're part of a roofing system designed to work together.

With the damaged decking repaired, we started building the new Owens Corning Platinum Roofing System in Fairfax Station.

WeatherLock ice and water barrier protects vulnerable areas, while ProArmor synthetic underlayment covers the remaining roof deck before the shingles go down.

Once the old roof came off in Fairfax Station, we could see the condition of the entire deck, and some areas needed attention.

Our crew replaced 11 sheets of damaged plywood and 42 linear feet of deteriorated trim boards around the dormers.

That's why inspecting the exposed structure matters before covering it back up. New shingles need a sound surface beneath them, and deteriorated wood doesn't become less important just because the finished roof will hide it.

This steep 10/12 Alexandria roof now features Owens Corning Duration shingles in Williamsburg Gray, and that new VELUX curb-mounted skylight makes a pretty great centerpiece.

The skylight includes a factory-installed solar-powered room-darkening shade and was installed with its flashing system integrated into the surrounding new roof.

The project also included new 6" white seamless gutters with 3"x4" downspouts and the Alu-Rex T-Rex Continuous Hanger system.

A new Broan bath-style vent and custom-bent W-valley flashing rounded out a project where the roofing, ventilation, skylight, and drainage details were all addressed together.

Ever wondered why there’s metal running down a roof valley? 🤔🏠

This is a custom-bent W-valley, and on this Alexandria roof, it has an important job.

Valleys receive water from two adjoining roof slopes. The metal creates a defined drainage path, while the raised center helps keep water flowing within its respective side of the valley as it moves toward the gutter.

It’s one of those details that may not get the same attention as the Williamsburg Gray Owens Corning Duration shingles surrounding it, but good roofing is all about how those details work together. 🔨

With the old roof removed and the deck evaluated, our Alexandria crew moved into the protective layers of the new roofing system.

RhinoRoof U20 synthetic underlayment covers the main roof field, while ice and water protection is installed at vulnerable areas specified in the roofing system, including eaves, valleys, sidewalls, and penetrations.

Once the shingles are installed, most of this disappears from view, but it remains an important part of how the roof is built.

Once the old shingles came off this roof in Alexandria, the wood deck underneath was finally fully visible.

Before covering it again, our crew evaluated the exposed decking to make sure we had a suitable foundation for the new roofing system. The existing skylight was also still in place here, just before that part of the project moved forward.
