We are excited to recognize Willodean Burton for her dedication and service to our UT Extension program in June! Although she is a brand-new 4-H volunteer, she is certainly not new to Extension. Willodean currently serves as a Cedar Hill FCE Officer and is also the President for the FCE County Council, where she has already demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment. She works to make the March Quilt Show an outstanding part of Robertson County FCE. Willodean regularly attends 4-H club meetings and is always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Her positive attitude, servant’s heart, warm hugs and enthusiasm for supporting everyone make her a wonderful addition to our UT Extension volunteer team.

Want to Grow Fruit in Your Own Backyard?
More and more Tennesseans want to grow fruit crops at home. There are many questions to be answered and decisions to be made. Which fruit ro fruits to grow? In-ground, containers, or raised beds? What about insect pests and diseases? How long after planting before harvest?
A great opportunity to learn more happens during UT AgResearch Field Days at research centers across the state. The Fruits of the Backyard is scheduled June 9 at the Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Spring Hill beginning at 8 am.

Prepare, Plant, Scout
After weeks of no rain, we gardeners have received - and continue to receive - almost daily rainfall. I am thankful for the rain and that I was able to prepare the soil, plant green beans and set out tomatoes, peppers, and a lone eggplant before this rainy period. I have learned that plants that remain wet from rainfall or overhead watering are more susceptible to disease than plants that enjoy dry periods between rains and/or receive water by irrigation at the soil level. So, the scouting begins!
The 2026 Tennessee Home fruit and Vegetable Calendar notes for May include helpful suggestions on getting started with scouting. Gardeners must observe the symptoms, identify the cause, and act to prevent the negative impacts of insects, diseases, and weeds.
