As we wrap up National Roundabouts Week, let's remember one of the main reasons for using this tool - safety.

Someone on another post commented that roundabouts are a waste of money, adding that "if it ain't broke don't fix it." Last year, 372 people died in intersection-related crashes in Ohio. That was 33% of all traffic deaths. As of September 18, we have seen 240 deaths at intersections - 31% of all traffic deaths. That isn’t broke? And if we had a tool that reduces those deaths by more than 90% that would be a waste of money? We shall simply have to disagree.

By the way, of those 612 deaths at intersections since 2025, two occurred at roundabouts. Still two too many.

This roundabout is located at State Route 41 and State Route 235 in Clark County. Before the roundabout, from 2001 - 2014, there were 5 fatalities at this location. ODOT changed the size of a hill on the road in the 1970s; in 1980, officials placed rumble strips and dual stop ahead signs on the road; in the early 1990s, red flashing lights on stop signs were installed; in 2000 a traffic light was installed and in 2011 back plates were put in place to help drivers see the traffic signal. Nothing worked. The roundabout was installed in 2014. There have been zero fatalities since.
