Fairey spoke about the first affordable housing development in recent memory in South Hadley—Way Finders’ The Clover—which is accepting applications until October 1. The 60-unit project owes much credit to South Hadley for creating a Smart Growth (“40R”) Zoning Overlay District, which allows cities and towns to increase their housing potential near town centers. And to receive financial incentives from the state for doing so.

“The town of South Hadley has been doing terrific work in setting the conditions for more affordable housing to be built. In addition to 40R, the town has been bringing together people who say, ‘Yes, I want housing in my backyard!’ The town voted a housing production plan to build 300 units of affordable housing in town. They have also created a housing trust and are really interested in welcoming the people who are coming to South Hadley and showing the positives of what affordable housing can bring to town.

“They recognize that affordability is an issue for them, and they want to create ways that people can stay in South Hadley, so their families can grow there, and people can age in place, in quality, affordable housing. The Clover is part of that, but they also want to create more.”
