Reasons to save:
THE ENVIRONMENT:
1. Old windows are 100% natural: Glass was blown, not melted in giant infernos and trucked long distances.

The wood is a gift to us from our original forest.
2. Landfills: Replacement windows end up in landfills. Old windows were built to be repaired--never wasted.
3. Removing lead paint correctly does no damage to the environment, but replacement glass with vinyl or aluminum frames burns tons of CO2 into the air. LOCAL ECONOMY:
1. Old windows create jobs. Their repair and m

Do not fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat until after the 2021 inauguration 09/20/2020

Please VOTE.
And please sign this petition. It'll only take a minute. Even I did it.

Do not fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat until after the 2021 inauguration Every senator from across the political spectrum must acknowledge the danger posed by rushing to fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat so close to an election. We all remember Mitch McConnell's blockade of President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland 237 days before the 2016 election. The 2020 election...

C&R instead of C&D? - SNC - Joe Connell 08/22/2020

Joe Connelly is a respected leader in the reuse industry. I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to him and ask if you'd be interested in working with me to offer a conference with Joe to help us look at the opportunities that REUSE can have for the greater Springfield area.
Send an email to me at: [email protected].

C&R instead of C&D? - SNC - Joe Connell Why is our default C&D, construction and demolition? How and when did those two get married into such an unholy union? And why do we continue in the age of waste to use such archaic language that perpetuates the worst of our practices. I would like to suggest we switch to C&R, construction and reuse...

One of the primary goals of preservation is the retention of original materials - preserve, maintain, repair, replace is the 'order of operations' according to the Secretary of the Interior.
Why is the focus on preservation? It isn't just because the buildings were built by generations before us and have cultural and historic value (although I think that is a worthy reason). The modern wood in inferior to any old growth wood used to build our buildings. By substituting new wood for old growth wood you are substituting wood with a much shorter life that will create the need more frequent repair and replacement.
Modern #2 Pine and Western Red Cedar have been over harvested, forced to grow faster and (especially the pine) are much more susceptible to rot from mold and mildew (usually starting inside). The growth rings in the wood between the old and new growth are remarkable in there difference. It is typically noted that on the East Coast the old growth/virgin timbers were all harvested by the end of the 1920's. Any wood you have from before that time period should be preserved.
You can buy salvaged wood if you need to replace from architectural salvage dealers or you can use a tropical hardwood (which is what we typically do if we need to replace exterior wood). By Danielle of Keperling Preservation Services
