Travel baseball isn’t a bad thing until you don’t take time off from throwing especially pitchers. If your child pitched last night in a game, they should probably not throw the next day. UCL rates are sky rocketing and it isn’t because UCLs just tear randomly. There’s a trend. When all we preach is about velocity at 10 years old what do you expect? When your kid plays 2-5 games a week, it’s a recipe for disaster. If your child has elbow pain, this should especially be concerning. That UCL tears by death of a million cuts. I have some advice for all parents. Let your kid play other sports or take at least two months of from throwing and playing baseball. The research points to a reduced injury rate with the more sports you play. They’re 10 years old. No college scouts are out looking for your 10 year old. Let them be a kid because they are only a kid once. Remember that.

ACL tears in southwest MO range up from 45,000$ and up. In 20 years the numbers of ACL tears haven’t really budged. We aren’t preventing any ACLs from occurring and it would be hard to say we could as a health/fitness professionals. So what do we do about all of these ACL tears?

1. Move more. - that includes you and your son or daughter. They look up to you and mimic what you do. If you are stagnant , on your phones, relaxing in a recliner, they most likely will do the same. Get up and lead an active lifestyle like you’re supposed to as a human.

2. Get off the phone and play with them. Actually parent your kid. Teach them new things, build things with your hands, have them do chores - what??? Yeah make them work with their hands. Be present and be a parent. Go play outside! Explore the woods. Let them play with the “not creepy” neighbor.

3. Stop sitting. Sitting for long periods of time in school isn’t a great thing for your kids movement literacy or for you as an adult. Standing would be a much greater option. Sitting is killing our joints slowly. PE teachers- make kids do the old school things- do push ups, pull ups, jumping jacks, air squats ect. Make kids be active. They need to be!! I can’t tell you how many kids I assess that can’t do a push up even up to the age of 18! We are devolving and going the wrong way. We wonder why we have so many health issues.. more movement in our day would most likely help with a lot of these health issues we see!

Really the solution is reverse what we have caused as a society. We are the ones who have caused this convenient and sedentary lifestyle in pursuit of a “comfortable” lifestyle. There is no such thing.

I will leave you with a quote parents, teachers and coaches.

“If you’re unwilling to be taught, you’re unworthy to teach”.

Step one . Realize we aren’t doing a good job. Kids are actually getting WORSE. I spend most of my clinical time with kids teach them the basics which should of been taught in grade school. We have to do better but if you’re unwilling to learn, we will get absolutely no where.

It is your duty as a parent, teacher and coach to direct these kids in a positive way. It’s your choice whether you will or not.

Age doesn’t matter. Longevity matters. This is a bottom up squat. It’s just an exercise, what’s more important is the intent behind the exercise. Intent matters. I am quite proud of this pickle baller, mother and staple in our community! Get to Movin!
