For three years, visitors thought an octopus was simply reaching out for attention. But CCTV footage told a very different story.

On June 2, 2025, an octopus at an aquarium managed to escape its enclosure while the building was quiet. He slipped across the floor, made his way toward the dock, and crawled surprisingly close to the ocean.

The octopus had become a favorite with visitors. He would reach through the enclosure, grab onto people, and sometimes hold on until staff offered him food to coax him back.

Everyone thought it was cute.

Then the escape happened.

Suddenly, those old interactions looked different. Was he really playing with visitors—or had he been trying to find a way out all along?

Staff had often used food to lure him back into the tank. But this time, he kept moving toward the water.

The footage went viral because it felt less like a random escape and more like a determined journey toward freedom.

For years, people thought he was reaching for attention.

An octopus didn’t just escape its tank—Inky found a way home.

In early 2016, at New Zealand’s National Aquarium in Napier, staff believe Inky slipped out through a slightly open lid overnight and crawled across the aquarium floor.

Then he found a drain.

Inky squeezed into the pipe and traveled roughly 50 metres through the drainage system before reaching the waters of Hawke’s Bay.

How was that even possible? An octopus has no rigid skeleton, meaning it can squeeze through incredibly tight spaces—as long as its hard beak can fit.

Inky was never found.

What started as a tiny opening in his tank became a 50-metre escape route to freedom.

🐬 She had every reason to fight for herself—but she kept choosing her baby instead.

As the tide slowly pulled away, a mother dolphin lay stranded near the rocky shoreline, exhausted and tightly tangled in an abandoned fishing net. Each wave seemed to pull the net tighter around her body.

But instead of struggling toward deeper water, she kept turning toward the same spot beside her.

Then rescuers noticed something moving beneath the net.

It was her tiny calf.

The baby was trapped too, almost completely hidden beneath the tangled mesh. Suddenly, the mother’s strange behavior made sense. She wasn’t giving up—she was staying beside her baby, using her own body to protect it from the rough waves.

Rescuers carefully moved closer, knowing one wrong cut could make the situation worse. They slowly lifted and traced each strand of fishing line, freeing the calf first.

The baby gave a weak flick of its tail.

Immediately, the mother turned toward it.

Piece by piece, the net finally came loose.

Yet the mother still didn’t leave. She stayed beside her exhausted calf, gently touching it with her snout as the shallow waves moved around them.

Then a stronger wave arrived.

The calf moved.

And the mother followed.

She could have tried to save herself—but she waited until her baby was ready to leave with her. ❤️🐬
