Fall is almost here!

The garden is slowing down, perennials are starting to tire and are needing cut back.

I’m thankful for the bursts of evergreen color throughout the garden from arborvitae. They bring consistency and texture through all the seasons.

Now that we’re descending into fall, plants are starting to slow down and prepare for winter. While it might not be the most “popular” time to garden, in my opinion fall is the BEST time for planting perennials!

Planting in the fall gives perennials a chance to establish in the soil before the real cold weather hits. That extra time to establish this year gives them a HUGE boost next year. If you want to guarantee that you’ll be harvesting elderberries next year, plant them now in the fall!

Restocking pay what you can veggies every day until they’re done!

Stop by and grab cherry tomatoes, slicing tomatoes (Brandywine and Gold Medal), cucumbers and lots of peppers! Today we put out mini bells, hot bananas, jalapeños and shish*tos.

If you’re grilling, I strongly recommend the shish*tos! They are great to toss with a little sea salt and quickly char for an easy side dish.

I have a TON of Roma tomatoes this year, perfect for making sauce! If you’re interested in 10 pound quantities, hit me up! They’ll likely only be available this weekend.

Four years ago I asked for a very specific pear tree. My sweet husband couldn’t find one anywhere around and special ordered me a very expensive, very pitiful twig of a tree. Four years later and I’m harvesting my first ‘Seckle’ pears and they’re everything I hoped they would be.

Also four years ago we launched the roadside stand and what a journey it has been. I hope we’ve helped you find more unique plants at better prices!

Rhubarb

This versatile and often under appreciated vegetable.

Often folks think of strawberry rhubarb pie and of course that is delightful. However, you can also stew it, make it into jam or compote, add it to muffins, roast it for a topping for yogurt, sautée it for a quick side dish.

The prime time to harvest is in early spring but once a plant it well-established, you can take a few leaves at a time all through the summer.

I try and grow a new veggie every year. This year it’s popcorn and Jupiter peppers. The verdict is still out on the popcorn, but the Jupiter peppers have been a hit. They’re small red bell peppers. The plants are incredibly productive and are covered in fruit. I think their smaller size helps them ripen sooner than a traditional bell and even though we’ve had lot of humidity this summer they’ve had no fungal issues at all.

My kids have been enjoying snacking on them for lunches and they cooked up beautifully for lunch the other day as grilled stuffed peppers.
