That’s a wrap on day 1 of 3 in Missouri. Met some of the most incredible people so far. We laughed, we cried, we hugged.

Where are we headed to serve this week? It’s far enough to catch a bunch of windshield bugs. RIP buddies

Marcia is such a lovely person! It brought so much joy just to spend time with her and learn about her for a project with Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. She's got an incredible life with people who love her.
The relationship between her Shared Living Provider and the SSA from Madison County Board of Developmental Disabilities was really great to see. They understood each other, respected each other, and worked together on the same goal of giving Marcia the best life. This type of collaboration is exactly what makes the greatest impact.
Sneak peak at a documentary that I've been working on for a little over a year as a passion project to shine a light on my incredible friend, Justin Shelpman. This is what resilience, ownership and using your gifts to change the world look like in action. So proud to call him a friend and the world deserves to know his story.
Advice from 45 years of experience looking back at a life spent serving people with developmental disabilities.
What if the best way to start a conversation with an employer isn’t to ask for a job?
For many people with developmental disabilities, getting in the door is hard. And for employment teams, those first conversations with businesses can feel intimidating.
A better starting point is curiosity: What does this employer need help with? Then we can look for a match between that need and a person’s strengths, interests, and goals.
That’s how we move from trying to place someone in a job to building an opportunity that works for both the person and the employer.
If your team is working on employer engagement, I’d love to hear what’s been working for you. Drop a comment below.

Mark Schlater changed my life.
When my family moved to the Dayton area, I needed a job. The ad that my wife found (shout out Emilie Silfies) for a Marketing position required a Bachelor's Degree and three years of experience. Neither of which I had. Mark Schlater interviewed me along with Joe Harmon at Toward Independence, Inc. and saw something in me that I didn't even see in myself and offered me the position.
Throughout my time at Toward Independence, Mark always pushed me to be the best version of myself, gave me opportunities to grow and learn, to make mistakes, and was always an encouragement to me. His work ethic and leadership showed me what real servant leadership looked like.
Fast forward to today, the skills, the confidence, and the encouragement of Mark Schlater has sincerely been a staple in the reason I even started Silfies Media and its growth into what it is today.
I'll forever be thankful for Mark's leadership and continued friendship. I had the honor of filming with him today for a project not even related to Toward Independence, and it was time I'll cherish.
Today, remember the ones who pushed you to grow, gave you a chance, didn't allow you to slack because they knew what you were capable of.
He's too old to have a page, so I can't even tag him in it.

In order to continue moving forward, we can't forget where we came from. Richard grew up at the Coldwater State Home Institution in Michigan where he experienced things that no child should ever have to go through. Stay tuned for his full story in the future.
