October 20, 1977
Three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie Gaines (one of three backing singers) and manager Dean Kilpatrick were killed in a plane crash en route from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The remaining members, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson were seriously injured, but all recovered. The band was finished for ten years, until the survivors invited Ronnie’s younger brother Johnny to join them in a reunion concert.

October 17,1979
Fleetwood Mac’s two record set “Tusk”, an experimental set of songs that cost the band a then record $1 million to record, is released by Warner Brothers Records. “Tusk” peaked at #4 in the US and achieved sales in excess of two million copies, spawning two Top Ten singles, “Sara” and the title track. It reached #1 in the UK and achieved Platinum status.

Doing something new for Tuesdays movie recommendations. Today we have “Dinner in America”. A romantic coming of age comedy set in the decaying midwestern suburbs.

Ed Sullivan, who introduced The Beatles and dozens of others to North America, passed away at the age of 73 from cancer of the esophagus. His Sunday night variety show was on the air for twenty-three years and won an Emmy and two Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Variety Show.

October 12,1968
The LP “Cheap Thrills” by Big Brother And The Holding Company hit #1 on the Billboard album chart for the first of eight non-consecutive weeks. It would prove to be the most successful LP of the year, selling over a million copies. On March 22, 2013, the album was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the US Library of Congress and was preserved into the National Recording Registry.

October 11, 1960
Aretha Franklin appears at the Village Vanguard club in New York, marking the first non-Gospel performance of her career. Her first secular single, “Today I Sing the Blues” would peak at #10 on the Billboard R&B chart later in the month.

No Doubt release their breakthrough album Tragic Kingdom, with the hits “Just a Girl” and “Don’t Speak.” It sells an amazing 10 million copies in America and catapults lead singer Gwen Stefani to stardom.

October 9,1972
Polydor Records releases Cream’s double album, “Heavy Cream”, which would peak at #135 on the Billboard 200. The set contains “White Room”, “Sunshine Of Your Love” and other tracks from the band’s back catalogue

October 8,1976
Stevie Wonder’s “Song in the Key of Life” debuts at #1 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart, becoming only the third LP in history to achieve that feat. It’s Wonder’s first release since his $13 million signing with Motown. The three record set would go Platinum, yielding the hits “Sir Duke”, “Isn’t She Lovely” and “I Wish”.

October 7,1955
Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, and a handful of others were arrested by police backstage at The Music Hall in Houston, Texas. The group were registered and fined on charges of gambling, but many believed that the true motivation behind the arrests was the police department’s unwillingness to accept new laws that allowed Black and White people to mix at events. Fortunately, the performers managed to make it back to the venue to play the second set of the show without the audience ever knowing what had happened.

October 6,1969
George Harrison’s song “Something” is released as the “A” side of a Beatles’ 45, a first for Harrison. Along with Lennon and McCartney’s “Come Together”, the single will reach number one in the US next month.
