I can have the roof measurements before I get to the house. Once I'm there, I still need to count the vents and penetrations, look for rotted areas, and verify what I'm working with.
On this visit, most of my time was spent talking with the homeowner. Getting the information for the estimate matters, but so does understanding what they want to do with the house and answering their questions.

If the roof is leaking, I don't recommend renovating the interior first. That's the conversation I had with a homeowner who was also planning an addition.
On this roof, the repair cost was a significant part of what a replacement would cost. My recommendation was to take care of the existing roof, then come back for the roofing portion when the addition was ready.

Here’s why I pay attention to the fastener when we replace a roof vent.
For this application, I’m using metal-to-wood screws with a rubber gasket under the head. The existing hole and how tightly you install the screw both matter.
You want to understand what that gasket is doing. Just tightening it as much as you can isn’t the goal.

A look back at the beginning stages of this project. From the slabs to the framing, you can see different parts of the site taking shape.
On the building in the foreground, we used temporary covering to protect the roof decking while preparing for the next stage of work. Protecting what’s already in place is part of moving the project forward.

When we get called out for a roof leak, sometimes the vent is the problem.
The base, the seams, and the material it’s made from all make a difference. I’m showing a few of those differences here and explaining why I prefer the folded metal base for this application.

This is a roofing project in Spring. You’ve got ridges, valleys, vents, and pipes coming through the roof. From the ground, most people are just looking at the shingles.

These vents can look the same, but you have to know what they’re being used for.
A bathroom exhaust, a dryer, and a stove exhaust are different applications. In this video, I’m showing the screen that can collect lint when the vent is used for a dryer.
As the contractor supervising the job, part of my responsibility is making sure we’re using the vent properly. You can’t just look at it and assume it’s right.
