The Kelmscott Press was one of the premier fine presses of the English speaking world. Their edition of the Works of Chaucer is known as one of the finest books produced in the nineteenth century. The current market for that book in its original binding starts at $125,000 and goes way up from there.
In 1975 The Basilisk Press produced a beautiful facsimile reprint of the Kelmscott Chaucer. Printing completed on December 31, 1974. Only 500 copies were made for sale. We have one of them.
Volume 1 is the reprint of Chaucer’s text complete with the Kelmscott Press’s extraordinarily beautiful illustrations, design, and typography.
Volume 2 shows the illustrations in more detail on fantastic tipped in plates.
This is one of the most beautiful books we have so we took extra photos for you.
The two volumes are oversize and quite heavy and come in their custom slipcase. This is a large and heavy set you should see in person.
At the moment there are zero copies of the Basilisk edition available online. Ours is in our Rare Book Room waiting to be discovered.
It is currently listed in the store for $3,000.
