In May 2026, members of the Spring Lake Fire Department, in cooperation with Grand Haven Public Safety, participated in specialized water rescue training at the Grand Haven Aquatic Center.
While Lake Michigan provides countless opportunities for recreation and enjoyment, its power is often underestimated. Tourists and community members alike may not realize how quickly changing weather, waves, currents, and water temperatures can turn a fun day at the beach into a dangerous situation.
That's why we continuously train to respond to a wide variety of water rescue emergencies. Regular training helps ensure our personnel are prepared with the skills, knowledge, and teamwork necessary to provide the highest level of service when seconds matter.
As summer approaches, here are a few important water safety reminders:
• Always pay attention to beach warning flags and posted conditions.
🟢 Green Flag – Low hazard, calm conditions
🟡 Yellow Flag – Moderate hazard, use caution
🔴 Red Flag – High hazard, dangerous conditions
⚫ Double Red Flag – Water closed to the public
• Never swim alone.
• Keep a close eye on children, even in shallow water.
• If caught in a rip current, don't fight it by swimming directly toward shore. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you're out of the current, then angle back toward shore.
• If you see someone struggling in the water, call 911 immediately. Throw something that floats if available, but avoid entering the water unless you are trained to do so.
We are committed to keeping our community and visitors safe both on and around the water. Have a fun, safe summer and remember: when in doubt, stay out.
