I want to share the story behind something special for our town.

This is “Moving Upward,” the first public art sculpture installed in our community, now standing at the roundabout at Poe Bridge.

The concept is simple but powerful: no matter what angle you view it from, the sculpture always points upward. That upward trajectory represents the dream and vision we have for our town; progress, momentum, and belief that our best days are ahead.

The piece was created by artist Adam Walls and was selected by the Appearance Committee in August 2024. After receiving DOT approval in December 2025, it was officially installed on December 9, 2025. The sculpture itself was paid by a grant by the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and at no cost to the town, with only installation expenses covered.

Projects like this don’t happen without people who care deeply about place, process, and progress. Special thanks to Jon Rorie, Carly Autry, Deanna Rosario, Steve Wing, Cynthia Wilt, and the entire Appearance Committee for their vision, persistence, and commitment to making our town more vibrant.

This sculpture isn’t just art, it’s a statement: we are moving upward, together.
