By the late 1970s, many American barbershops featured hairstyle charts to help customers choose from the era’s most popular men’s cuts. These guides displayed multiple angles—front, side, and profile—allowing barbers to recreate each look with accuracy.

The styles reflected a major shift in men’s grooming, with hair becoming longer, fuller, and more textured than in earlier decades. Popular options included layered s**g cuts, feathered sides, thick sideburns, and longer collars that sometimes reached the shoulders.

This transformation was driven largely by pop culture, as artists like The Beatles and other 1970s performers helped normalize longer hairstyles for men. By the mid-1970s, industry surveys suggested the average American man’s hair was nearly twice as long as it had been in the early 1960s.

These charts also served as practical training tools. Barber schools and licensing boards used standardized diagrams to teach techniques like tapering, layering, and texturizing, while shops displayed them so customers could simply point to a desired style—an early version of today’s “show a photo” method.

The growing popularity of longer hairstyles in the late 1960s and 1970s also contributed to the rise of unisex salons, which began competing with traditional barbershops and helped reshape the American hair-care industry.
