Parrots Paradise

Meet Popcorn, he’s a 26 year old male Umbrella Cockatoo we recently had surrendered to us, he’s currently staying with our foster as we get to know him and his personality. I want to use him as an educational opportunity.

Popcorn has an unknown past for the most part, we met him about a year ago when someone first got ahold of him, and then was soon after rehomed again. That home loved him very much but was going to be going through a lot of medical issues and wouldn’t have the time to care for him properly anymore, so they reached out to us.

I noticed right away that his feet looked terrible, almost looked like they were burnt, they’re not thankfully, but definitely irritated. At the time he didn’t seem to act like anything was bothering him so we sent him home with Jess and planned a vet visit within the week. His old owner said she had put h**p oil on his feet regularly, but never said anything about a previous vet visit regarding it.

Jess noticed he seemed very uncomfortable today so we got him into the vet same day. We did bloodwork and got some meds to help in the meantime. It’s likely vitaminosis or fatty liver disease. It’s so incredibly important to have your birds on a proper diet, it’s heartbreaking to see him go through this. Parrots shouldn’t be eating nuts and seeds all day, a base of healthy pellets, fresh veggies and a small amount of seeds or nuts is the recommended diet for most species. If this ends up being fatty liver disease, they believe it would be end stages of it. There of course is also a chance it could be something else, but we won’t know until the bloodwork comes back. Regardless, something is going on that we need to get fixed as soon as possible to make him comfortable again. He’s really a gentle soul and such a sweet boy.

Situations like this are why we have an emergency fund. We never ask for donations, but will always gladly take them to help birds in need like sweet Popcorn! Please keep him in your thoughts as we figure this out, he’s too young to be having all these issues.🤍💛

Matcha gave her approval for our new custom Matcha’s Mix stickers!

We plan to get these made for all of our mixes, but we currently only have it for the one as of now. We will also eventually get these in gloss… we might even get resealable bags, but for now to keep costs down we will do them this way!

I pulled this clutch of parakeets for feedings today! There’s only two in this clutch, but we have another pair on 5 eggs so far, and they’re looking fertile. Both of these babies will be blue and white with grey wing stripes. Keep watch to see what DNA comes back as and when they’re ready for deposits!

The baby crimsons are growing like weeds! Three are still available for deposits.

Our order is officially in the system and out on the shelves! Jungles Mini Mix is missing from the shelf, but we’re making that now and will have it out by the end of the day. We’ve got lots of new perches and toys that haven’t been in stock before, make sure to come and check out all the new stuff!

Introducing our three newest rescue/rehomes! These birds are NOT currently available, we haven’t even had them for a week yet. They likely won’t be looking for new homes for a couple months while we transition them onto a healthier diet and get to know their personalities.

“Bird” is a male blue fronted Amazon, about 20 years old. He is not currently at the store but with our foster Jess in the meantime. He is very hand shy but politely takes treats. Once we get him onto a pellet based diet I think we will have a better shot at getting him to step up. He would occasionally allow pets from his old owner, but only on his terms. Overall he has been very quiet for an Amazon as well! We just got him into a much more appropriately sized cage and trying to get him use to more toys as well.

“Taz” is a female blue and gold macaw, at least 10 years old but more likely in her 20s. She is at the store and very social, feel free to come say hi to her in person! She steps up and allows pets and is very polite with her beak. She hadn’t had access to toys, so we’re trying to teach her how to chew on some, but she at least enjoys chewing on her perches. She’s been a bit of a picky eater but is at least eating fruitblend and tropistix, next step is to get her into a healthier pellet blend! She is terrified of water, so her feathers are a bit ruffled but we’re working on getting her use to it with positive reinforcement, but I expect it to take a while.

“Buddy” is a male African Grey that came from the same home as Taz and estimated to be about the same age. He is also currently at the store and ready to say hi to people! He has let a few people pet him through the cage but hasn’t tried to step up at all, we’re still unsure if he even knows how to at this point. He’s also a bit picky but at least trying some pellets, we’re also slowly adding a few more toys to his cage as well.

Again, these birds are not currently available so please don’t message us asking about their rehoming price. We will post once they’re ready to start looking for their new homes! But please feel free to come in and interact with Taz and Buddy, the more socializing the better! Once we get to know Bird a bit better, we will try to get him into the store to meet some potential homes as well.

World Parrot Expo day two was much slower than the first day, apparently there was a fair going on right down the road as well. That’s okay though, we still had a blast! We were able to sneak away to look at the aviary birds and saw a lot of beautiful, rare species. We made quite a few connections and may be carrying some really awesome toys from other vendors in the store soon! Romeo was an angel the whole weekend, he got a bit sleepy and grumpy the second half of the day, but that’s to be expected. We’re happy to be back home and are preparing to receive our large store order tomorrow! Stay tuned for when everything it in the system and out on the shelves!
